Community Training and Speakers
The Disability Action Center offers technical assistance, training, and speakers for business, education, faith-based, and government groups. These learning opportunities are audience specific and taught by staff with years of experience. Training is available in either 1½ hr, half-day or full-day sessions. Speaking requests are honored on a case by case basis. Fees are on a sliding scale, and discounted for non-profit groups.
Requests have been made for the following:
Architectural Barrier Review
Advice, technical information, and assistance in removing physical and program barriers from residences, churches, schools, government offices and businesses. A qualified expert will assess barriers and needs through a site review and written recommendations.
Accessibility Assessment
A more technical profile, measuring an office or physical plant against the letter of ADA compliance. Components include personal interviews of customers and stakeholders, as well as a written summary.
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990
Training for community members and groups to learn about the Act, which makes it unlawful to discriminate against a citizen with a disability. The ADA affects everyone in a community. 85% of all Americans may qualify for assistance under this law in their lifetime.
Disability Awareness
Setting specific curriculum that debunks myths and probes attitudinal barriers. Specific objectives include a dialogue leading to greater sensitivity about issues like: People First language, communication strategies, common sense consumer rights, and inclusion.
