Individual and Systems Advocacy
The Disability Action Center assists community members to better represent themselves and their needs through knowledge and support.
Individual advocacy offers opportunities to learn about personal and civil rights such as those related to benefits, education, employment, health care, and housing. Systems advocacy seeks to engage local, state, and national leaders in an ongoing dialogue regarding public policy as it relates to citizens with disabilities.
Issues such as labor laws, public accommodations, and transportation are significant in the promotion of full inclusion in every aspect of community life. Additionally, the Center promotes personal responsibility as a component of advocacy, and supports employment, lawful dissent, and voting as important self-directed steps along a path to greater independence. The Center offers education to assist individuals with disabilities in understanding their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the community.
Benefits Advocacy
The process of obtaining Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can be a challenge. An Independent Living Specialist can assist you in applying for and keeping benefits that help you live independently in the community.
Accessible Housing
Finding accessible housing, or making a residence accessible, is a critical component of independent community living. An Independent Living Specialist can help you find a residential setting that is affordable, or modify a current one, to meet your individual needs.
Health Care Access
Medicaid is a health insurance program that is available to low-income citizens who qualify through a recognized eligibility process. Medicare is similarly available, and has internal components including Part A, Part B, and Prescription Drug Coverage. An Independent Living Specialist can help you understand the eligibility and application process of both programs.
